Sensual, dreamy, and fragrant, jasmine sambac oil (jasminum sambac) is a very sought after and popular choice in the world of essential oils. So, why is jasmine sambac so very enticing and alluring?
Well, we are about to find out.
What is Jasmine Sambac Essential Oil Made Of?
Jasmine sambac essential oil comes from the Arabian jasmine. It is also commonly referred to as Sambac Jasmine.
A species of jasmine native to tropical Asia — from eastern South Asia to Southeast Asia — the flower is now naturalized in many places. This includes Christmas Island, Central America, Mauritius, Madagascar, the Maldives, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Europe.
Growing up to only about 3m in height, its flowers are often featured in perfumes and teas. Besides that, Jasmine Sambac is also the national flower of two different countries: the Philippines and Indonesia.
How is Jasmine Sambac Essential Oil Extracted?
There is a fair bit of difficulty associated with extracting jasmine oil from the flower petals. Because of how delicate and fragile the flower petals are, steam distillation — the common extraction method for most essential oils — may not be the best method here as steam distillation uses high heat.
This can cause the flower petals to deteriorate and thereby making the essential oil extraction impossible. Besides that, the heat can also destroy the fragile aromatic molecules in the petal, rendering it fragrant-less.
That is why a more common method used is a two-step chemical process called solvent extraction. Here, a solvent is added to the plant to help dissolve the essential oil. Then, the solution is filtered and concentrated by distillation. Once done, pure alcohol is used to extract the oil. Finally, when the alcohol evaporates, the oil is left behind.
Meanwhile, a newer method uses carbon dioxide to extract the essential oil from the flowers.
