How Diet and Exercise Can Help Combat Acne

In addition to a regular skincare routine that employs natural skincare products to cleanse and treat the skin, there are other ways you can help combat acne and prevent regular breakouts.

Exercise

Working out is a good way to handle any stress you may have. It can also go a long way in helping to prevent inflammation. When we exercise, we are decreasing our stress hormones, increasing our endorphins, and ultimately improving our mood.

Exercise also helps to balance the body but when you first start out, you may find that you do have the occasional breakout. This is because exercising can increase your cortisol levels. However, the more you exercise and fall into a routine, the less the breakouts will be, and your skin will begin to improve naturally.

However, to take advantage of what exercise can offer your skin, you need to make sure to follow a post-workout routine as well. Before you even exercise, you should remove all your makeup. If not, when you sweat, the makeup can begin to clog up the pores. After your workout, you want to change and shower right away. This includes cleansing your face.

Diet

While more research is needed, we still see ways that changing our diets can help prevent acne breakouts. Some of the evidence already in existence suggests that we can prevent acne breakouts simply by consuming more omega-3 fatty acids. We should also lessen our dairy consumption and eat fewer foods with a high glycemic index.

Yellow and orange fruits and veggies like carrots and apricots are skin-friendly food choices we can reach for. Spinach and other leafy veggies, tomatoes, blueberries, whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and lean meat options are a few more smart food choices to incorporate into our diets.

Foods to Avoid

Some foods to avoid when changing your diet to help combat acne include sugar (both natural and processed), dairy products including skim milk and chocolate. You should also avoid foods that can ultimately trigger your insulin to spike such as pasta, white rice, and white bread   in addition to sugar. These are considered high-glycemic carbohydrates because they are made of simple sugars and can cause and even worsen acne.

So, in addition to exercising regularly and changing our diet to reflect healthier choices, regularly facial cleansing and toning with an astringent like witch hazel all help to promote acne-free and healthy skin for a much better complexion.
