Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil, like most of our other Bali Beauty Benefits Oils, is filled with a variety of beneficial vitamins, fatty acids and minerals that are great for the skin, face, scalp and hair. But something different about jojoba oil is that it’s not technically an oil. Jojoba oil is technically a polyunsaturated wax. But for simplicity, let’s just keep calling it jojoba oil for now!
Because jojoba oil is a wax rather than an oil, it has different properties than some of our other Bali Beauty Benefits Oils and has its own benefits and uses for the skin, face, scalp and hair. That’s why jojoba oil is a great addition to any natural skin care routine.
As we discussed in our first Natural Skin Care Series post, Natural Skin Care Defined, natural skin care means using the medicinal and therapeutic powers of raw, unprocessed ingredients to enhance the health and longevity of your skin, all while treating many common ailments and conditions at the same time.
Most of these natural ingredients come from plants, vegetables, seeds, fruits and flowers; all things found in nature. In the case of jojoba oil, the oil comes from the seed of the jojoba plant, which looks like a brown bean and is native to the southwestern United States. The oil remains liquid at room temperature and has quite a long shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about it spoiling.
What makes Jojoba Oil work?
Like we said, most of our Bali Beauty Benefits Oils have a variety of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants and other properties that make them such potent natural skin care options. In the case of jojoba oil, according to DrAxe.com, it “contains beneficial ingredients, including vitamin E, vitamin B complex, silicon, chromium, copper and zinc. It has a very high percentage of iodine at 82 percent, which gives jojoba oil its power to heal. It also contains three fatty acids: erucic (13.6 percent), gadoleic (71.3 percent) and oleic (11.2 percent).”
As we’ve mentioned in our first article about Argan Oil, which also contains vitamin E, vitamin E has a wealth of benefits not only for the skin, hair and scalp, but also for the body as a whole. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Vitamin E is a nutrient that’s important to vision, reproduction, and the health of your blood, brain and skin.
Vitamin E also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that might protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals might play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.”
Jojoba oil also contains the vitamin B complex, which means it contains all 8 B vitamins. According to Healthline.com, “B vitamins play a vital role in maintaining good health and well-being. As the building blocks of a healthy body, B vitamins have a direct impact on your energy levels, brain function, and cell metabolism.
Vitamin B complex helps prevent infections and helps support or promote:
- cell health
- growth of red blood cells
- energy levels
- good eyesight
- healthy brain function
- good digestion
- healthy appetite
- proper nerve function
- hormones and cholesterol production
- cardiovascular health
- muscle tone”
Unfortunately, jojoba oil is not recommended for eating. While it is edible, it is not digestible, so the oil would pass through your system unchanged, which we would not recommend.
However, as we discuss at greater length in Natural Skin Care Defined, one of the main reasons we advocate using natural skin care is because your body absorbs things through your skin. When it comes to fatty acids, minerals and vitamins like vitamin E and the vitamin B complex, this can be a great thing. But when it comes to free radicals, chemicals and toxins, this might not seem so great.
Luckily the skin, which is also your body’s largest organ, also plays a large role in the body’s detoxification process. Along with the liver, kidneys and other organs, the skin helps to remove toxins from the body. It does this by sweating!
The bad news is that many common commercial beauty and cosmetics products can clog the pores, making it more difficult for your skin to effectively detoxify. Not only that, but many of these products are made from a wide range of chemicals, which your skin can absorb and then would need to remove. So it can be a rough cycle.
That’s why we’re such big fans of natural skin care here at Utama Spice. It’s the best way to break that cycle and reclaim your natural, healthy skin. If you’ve read some of our natural skin care posts, you’ve probably seen our philosophy before, but we truly believe it: If you wouldn’t cook with it, you shouldn’t put it on your body.
The Benefits of Jojoba Oil
Now that you know what jojoba oil is (it’s a wax!), where it comes from and some of the amazing vitamins, minerals and fatty acids it contains, let’s take a look at some of the properties of jojoba oil that make it so great for the hair, scalp, skin and face.
Jojoba oil has anti inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic and non comedogenic properties.
Jojoba oil’s anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe inflamed or irritated skin and can even help with lower lying issues like muscle aches or joint pain. Jojoba oil’s antioxidant properties, which come from the vitamin E, help to fight signs of aging, protect against free radicals and reduce wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. Jojoba oil’s antibacterial properties can help to cleanse the scalp and skin of some bacteria and fungi, helping to maintain its overall health. Jojoba oil’s hypoallergenic properties means that it almost never causes allergic reactions and is safe for topical application. Lastly, jojoba oil’s non comedogenic property means that although it seems oily, it can be applied to the skin without making it greasy and doesn’t clog your skin’s pores. This, combined with the previous properties, makes jojoba oil great for acne treatment.
So, now you’ve seen the vitamins, the minerals, the fatty acids and the properties that jojoba oil has to offer. Next, let’s take a look at some of the benefits you can expect.
