How to Wash Your Hair Less

Many of us wash our hair daily, while others only wash their hair twice a week. Which is the right way to go? When you wash your hair every day, you are stripping the hair of its natural oils. The more often you wash your hair, the more oils you are washing away. This can make your body produce even more oil to compensate for what it is losing.

The amount of oil you produce depends a lot on your body and hair type. While some people can wash their hair only twice a week, others may find that to be impossible. However, you should still find a way to wash your hair less, and we are here today to help you do just that.

Switch Shampoos

The first step is to switch from your regular shampoo to a castile soap. This can be a switch you do at one time, or it can be more gradual. You should do this for about two to three weeks so that your hair can get used to the new soap. You should also be cutting down on the number of washes you do as well during this time.

Taper Washes

You can start off by dropping at least one hair wash per week. Once you taper down, you can start washing your hair every other day and then try to drop another day or two as your body gets used to it.

Break-in Period

As you switch from your regular shampoo to castile soap or something more natural and start to cut down on your hair washes, you will find that your hair will go through a break-in period. This is simply your body trying to adjust to your new routine. You may find that your hair is much greasier during this time, but this will go away as your scalp gets used to the new routine.

To help get through those greasy hair days, you can always wear your hair up or use a dry shampoo. If you need to increase your washings until you find the frequency that works best for your hair and body, then that is what you have to do.

Again, the process is going to be different for everyone because everyone will react in a different way. You just have to keep trying and experimenting until you find what works best for your hair.

Meta: Washing our hair every day actually strips it of its natural oils. For this reason, it is important to find a way to wash your hairless.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

Utama Spice Nutmeg Essential Oil

Nutmeg essential oil can be great for your skin, your home, your health and much more! While you might know nutmeg as the spice from your kitchen, as we’ll discuss momentarily, essential oils are made from all kinds of plants, roots, vegetables, seeds, fruits, and yes, even spices!

The Power of Spices

In one of our recent posts, we went over some of the benefits of another common household spice: Turmeric! As we mentioned in our article, Turmeric Benefits for Skin, here are our Top 8 Benefits of and Ways to Use Turmeric for the Skin:

  1. Amazing Anti-Inflammatory Properties & Natural Glow

So now you can hopefully see that just because you cook with something, doesn’t mean it might not also have plenty of benefits for your health and skin.

In fact, our main philosophy here at Utama Spice is ‘If you wouldn’t cook with it, you shouldn’t put it on your body.’

Natural Skin Care

This philosophy is so important to us because using natural products and ingredients on your skin can have a wealth of benefits for your health. As we discussed in greater detail in our article Natural Skin Care Defined, natural skin care means using unprocessed raw ingredients on your skin not only as an alternative to common commercial products, but also to boost the health and longevity of your skin. This is because many of these natural ingredients, especially the ones we recommend here at Utama Spice Bali, have therapeutic and medicinal properties for your skin.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

Utama Spice Nutmeg Essential Oil

These therapeutic and medicinal properties come from the various vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fatty acids and more that these oils and ingredients contain. Each different essential oil, like nutmeg, is made from a different plant, herb, spice, vegetable, root, seed or fruit and because of that, each ingredient or oil has its own unique properties and benefits.

Meanwhile, most common beauty and cosmetics products are made from chemicals and synthetic compounds. While these synthetic compounds might be good for whichever purpose the product is designed, they are generally not great for the overall health and longevity of your skin. And things that are not great for your skin, are not great for your body.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

How are the two connected?

The Skin-Body Connection

What is great for your skin is great for your body because your skin actually absorbs the materials that are put on it. This can be a good thing if you are putting natural healing ingredients filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants on your skin. But it might not be so good for you if the products you’re absorbing through your skin are made from synthetic compounds and chemicals.

In addition, these chemicals and synthetic compounds can sometimes clog your pores. This is significant because your pores are the most important part of your skin’s ability to defend and detoxify itself.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

The skin is actually the body’s largest organ, and with the help of the kidneys and liver, the skin plays a crucial role in your body’s detoxification system. It does this through sweat, which the skin uses to rid itself of toxins and chemicals.

Unfortunately, if you use synthetic cosmetics products frequently, this means that some of these synthetic and chemical-based cosmetics and beauty products can actually cause your body to absorb additional chemicals, while also making it more difficult for your skin to detoxify itself.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

Utama Spice Nutmeg Essential Oil

That’s why we are such huge proponents of using natural skin care solutions like Nutmeg Essential Oil!

Natural skin care products are safe, proven, effective and affordable! They are also much better for the ecosystem and the environment.

Another Reason to Switch to Natural Products

Natural skin care products, like Nutmeg Oil, are made from raw, unprocessed ingredients that are made from things found naturally occurring in nature. Many companies that make natural skin care products, like us here at Utama Spice, get their ingredients from farms that grow their plants, spices, fruits, vegetables, roots and herbs in a sustainable manner. Additionally, because the products are made up of ingredients found in nature, their byproduct doesn’t harm the environment, plant or animal life or the ecosystem.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

Conversely, most common cosmetics and beauty products that you see in commercials on television or on shelves in the local drug store are mass-produced. And like we said, and you can see if you check the ingredients on the back label, many of these typical cosmetics and beauty products are made from a range of chemicals, synthetic compounds and ingredients we can’t even pronounce. The byproduct of the manufacturing process to make these products also contains these chemicals and synthetic compounds and is typically released into either the air or the water, where it can make its way back to the ocean, harming sea life and the ecosystem.

But don’t worry! Natural skin care products are an amazing alternative to the typical cosmetics products. On top of the other benefits, most natural skin care products also provide other benefits and solutions. Some are great for the hair and scalp, while others are great for your home, your health, your eyes, or even your sleep. Next, we’ll show you our 4 Best Benefits of Nutmeg Essential Oil and you’ll see all the ways you can use it for your skin and more.

Benefits of Nutmeg Essential Oil

The unique blend of natural compounds contained within Nutmeg Essential Oil allows it to provide a ton of different benefits. We’ll share our Top 4 and then discuss why and how nutmeg oil works.

  • Relieve Stress and Boost Your Mood

What Makes Nutmeg Oil So Good?

Antioxidants: Rejuvenate Your Skin and Fight Free Radicals

Like many other essential oils, Nutmeg Oil is so effective at treating certain conditions and providing certain benefits because of the unique blend of natural compounds it contains. According to Healthline.com, “Nutmeg contains an abundance of antioxidants, including plant pigments like cyanidins, essential oils, such as phenylpropanoids and terpenes, and phenolic compounds, including protocatechuic, ferulic, and caffeic acids.”

Antioxidants are not only important for your skin because they help to treat wrinkles, heal scarring and reduce signs of aging, but they are also great for your body. The article by Healthline continues on to say that “Antioxidants are compounds that protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. These are molecules that have an unpaired electron, which makes them unstable and reactive.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

When free radical levels become too high in your body, oxidative stress occurs. It’s associated with the onset and progression of many chronic conditions, such as certain cancers and heart and neurodegenerative diseases.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, preventing cellular damage and keeping your free radical levels in check.”

Anti-Inflammatory: Reduce Pain and Soothe Aching Muscles and Joints

Nutmeg Essential Oil also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. The properties come from “compounds called monoterpenes, including sabinene, terpineol, and pinene. These may help reduce inflammation in your body and benefit those with inflammatory conditions.

utama spice best natural organic nutmeg essential oil skincare benefit

“What’s more, the wide array of antioxidants found in the spice, such as cyanidins and phenolic compounds, also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties,” according to Healthline.com. These anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce pain and soothe aching joints or muscles.

Anti-Bacterial: Keep Your Skin Free from Bacteria and Infection

While Nutmeg Oil is providing its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also acting as an anti-bacterial agent. As stated on Healthline.com, “nutmeg has antibacterial effects against potentially harmful bacteria, including E. coli and Streptococcus mutans.” This anti-bacterial power can be used orally and topically to fight off bacteria and keep your skin and mouth clean.

Anti-Depressant: Relieve Stress and Boost Your Mood

Nutmeg Essential Oil is also said to relieve stress and brighten your mood, making it great for diffusing in the home or office. This is thanks to nutmeg’s antidepressant properties which “research has shown “induced significant antidepressant effects in both mice and rats.”

And when you combine all of these properties together, you have an oil that can keep your skin clean from bacteria, fight off free radicals, reduce pain and brighten your day!

Natural Exfoliators You Can Find in Your Kitchen

The good news is that they can ditch the commercially sold products and instead opt for DIY exfoliation at home with commonly found household products.

Rice Powder
When rice gets ground down into a powder, it works as an exfoliant. It can also be combined with coconut oil, sugar, and ginger root for even more therapeutic benefits.

Yogurt
This is a lesser-known exfoliant because it is so smooth in texture. However, yogurt contains lactic acid which can effectively remove dead skin cells, help with acne breakouts, and can even soften the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar
This vinegar also contains lactic acid as well as malic acids that can exfoliate, reduce blemishes, and help treat acne. It also has alpha-hydroxy acids which help the skin rejuvenate much faster.

DIY Exfoliant Scrub
To make an easy exfoliating scrub at home, all you need is the following:
1 cup of coconut oil
2 cups granulated sugar
40-50 drops of any essential oil of your choosing
1 mason jar
Mix the coconut oil and sugar together in a bowl until paste forms. Depending on the thickness you want to achieve, you can add more or less oil and sugar.
You can then add in the essential oil drops. Once done, scoop the mixture into a mason jar.
Some essential oils you can choose that are good at detoxifying the skin include grapefruit oil, juniper berry, and cedarwood.

Why Essential Oils are So Expensive

utama spice essential oils beauty therapeutic benefits balinese

If you have begun to dabble in the world of essential oils, you may have found that the better and purest essential oils are much more expensive. Essential oils, in general, are often on the pricier side because there are many aspects of its production that need to be taken into account along with a few other factors.

Price Difference Among Brands

One of the biggest price differences you will find is between different brands. One of the factors that contribute to the discrepancy in price is the quality of the essential oils. Some may be organic, and some may have a different distilling process, and all this leads to the overall quality of the essential oils being produced.

Therapeutic Grade Oils

Many companies may claim that they have therapeutic grade oils, but there is no such thing. This is a ploy often used to get people to pay more money for essential oils that really are just not the best quality.

Along the same line, cheaper oils will not always offer you the same therapeutic value as essential oils that you purchased from a company that has invested more care into the distillation, storage, and shipment of their oils.

Lavender Versus Orange Oil

Now there is going to be a price difference in the different types of oils as well. Lavender oil, for example, is probably going to cost more than orange oil. The price of oils is also attributed to their species. Some will be more expensive than others and will have different therapeutic properties as well.

The Extraction Process

Since oils extracted from the leaves of a tree can result in different aromas and properties when compared to extracting the oil from the bark of the tree. You may find that oils taken from the bark will be more costly because they are often more preferred.

Also, many essential oils are steam distilled, while many citrus oils are cold-pressed. So, you also have to figure in the cost of extraction as well as the costs involved to produce the essential oil. This is another reason the prices may be higher.

Along with these factors, you also must consider how much plant material is used to produce the oil, how much overhead is involved, as well as the labels and packaging. If you want the higher quality oils that provide you the best in therapeutic benefits, then you are going to be paying a bit more for that quality.

Meta: essential oils can vary in price for many reasons and there are also factors to consider when trying to understand why they are so expensive.

Jojoba Oil Bali: 8 Best Beauty Benefits

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Jojoba Oil: For Hair, Skin & More!

Ready to learn about all the ways you can use jojoba oil for skin care, hair care and more?

Then you’ll want to keep reading!

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil, like most of our other Bali Beauty Benefits Oils, is filled with a variety of beneficial vitamins, fatty acids and minerals that are great for the skin, face, scalp and hair. But something different about jojoba oil is that it’s not technically an oil. Jojoba oil is technically a polyunsaturated wax. But for simplicity, let’s just keep calling it jojoba oil for now!

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Utama Spice Jojoba Oil

Because jojoba oil is a wax rather than an oil, it has different properties than some of our other Bali Beauty Benefits Oils and has its own benefits and uses for the skin, face, scalp and hair. That’s why jojoba oil is a great addition to any natural skin care routine.

As we discussed in our first Natural Skin Care Series post, Natural Skin Care Defined, natural skin care means using the medicinal and therapeutic powers of raw, unprocessed ingredients to enhance the health and longevity of your skin, all while treating many common ailments and conditions at the same time.

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Most of these natural ingredients come from plants, vegetables, seeds, fruits and flowers; all things found in nature. In the case of jojoba oil, the oil comes from the seed of the jojoba plant, which looks like a brown bean and is native to the southwestern United States. The oil remains liquid at room temperature and has quite a long shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about it spoiling.

What makes Jojoba Oil work?

Like we said, most of our Bali Beauty Benefits Oils have a variety of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants and other properties that make them such potent natural skin care options. In the case of jojoba oil, according to DrAxe.com, it “contains beneficial ingredients, including vitamin E, vitamin B complex, silicon, chromium, copper and zinc. It has a very high percentage of iodine at 82 percent, which gives jojoba oil its power to heal. It also contains three fatty acids: erucic (13.6 percent), gadoleic (71.3 percent) and oleic (11.2 percent).”

As we’ve mentioned in our first article about Argan Oil, which also contains vitamin E, vitamin E has a wealth of benefits not only for the skin, hair and scalp, but also for the body as a whole. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Vitamin E is a nutrient that’s important to vision, reproduction, and the health of your blood, brain and skin.

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Vitamin E also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that might protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals might play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.”

Jojoba oil also contains the vitamin B complex, which means it contains all 8 B vitamins. According to Healthline.com, “B vitamins play a vital role in maintaining good health and well-being. As the building blocks of a healthy body, B vitamins have a direct impact on your energy levels, brain function, and cell metabolism.

Vitamin B complex helps prevent infections and helps support or promote:

  • cell health
  • growth of red blood cells
  • energy levels
  • good eyesight
  • healthy brain function
  • good digestion
  • healthy appetite
  • proper nerve function
  • hormones and cholesterol production
  • cardiovascular health
  • muscle tone”

Unfortunately, jojoba oil is not recommended for eating. While it is edible, it is not digestible, so the oil would pass through your system unchanged, which we would not recommend.

However, as we discuss at greater length in Natural Skin Care Defined, one of the main reasons we advocate using natural skin care is because your body absorbs things through your skin. When it comes to fatty acids, minerals and vitamins like vitamin E and the vitamin B complex, this can be a great thing. But when it comes to free radicals, chemicals and toxins, this might not seem so great.

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Luckily the skin, which is also your body’s largest organ, also plays a large role in the body’s detoxification process. Along with the liver, kidneys and other organs, the skin helps to remove toxins from the body. It does this by sweating!

The bad news is that many common commercial beauty and cosmetics products can clog the pores, making it more difficult for your skin to effectively detoxify. Not only that, but many of these products are made from a wide range of chemicals, which your skin can absorb and then would need to remove. So it can be a rough cycle.

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

That’s why we’re such big fans of natural skin care here at Utama Spice. It’s the best way to break that cycle and reclaim your natural, healthy skin. If you’ve read some of our natural skin care posts, you’ve probably seen our philosophy before, but we truly believe it: If you wouldn’t cook with it, you shouldn’t put it on your body.

The Benefits of Jojoba Oil

Now that you know what jojoba oil is (it’s a wax!), where it comes from and some of the amazing vitamins, minerals and fatty acids it contains, let’s take a look at some of the properties of jojoba oil that make it so great for the hair, scalp, skin and face.

Jojoba oil has anti inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, hypoallergenic and non comedogenic properties.

utama spice best natural organic jojoba essential oil bali

Utama Spice Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil’s anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe inflamed or irritated skin and can even help with lower lying issues like muscle aches or joint pain. Jojoba oil’s antioxidant properties, which come from the vitamin E, help to fight signs of aging, protect against free radicals and reduce wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. Jojoba oil’s antibacterial properties can help to cleanse the scalp and skin of some bacteria and fungi, helping to maintain its overall health. Jojoba oil’s hypoallergenic properties means that it almost never causes allergic reactions and is safe for topical application. Lastly, jojoba oil’s non comedogenic property means that although it seems oily, it can be applied to the skin without making it greasy and doesn’t clog your skin’s pores. This, combined with the previous properties, makes jojoba oil great for acne treatment.

So, now you’ve seen the vitamins, the minerals, the fatty acids and the properties that jojoba oil has to offer. Next, let’s take a look at some of the benefits you can expect.

Top 8 Bali Beauty Benefits of Jojoba Oil

  1. Excellent Moisturizer that Hydrates and Nourishes the Skin
  2. Amazing for Acne Treatment by Balancing Sebum Production
  3. A Great Non Comedogenic Oil that makes for a Fantastic Natural Makeup Remover

Essential Oil Bali: 14 Best Beauty Benefits

utama spice essential oils beauty therapeutic benefits balinese

Essential Oil Bali: Check Out All the Different Uses!

Aren’t you curious about all the buzz around essential oils?

Then you’ll want to keep reading!

Natural Skin Care

Essential oils are one of our favorite components to include in your natural skincare routine! They have so many benefits for the skin.

In our previous article, Natural Skin Care Defined, we talk about great lengths about what natural skincare is, what the benefits are and why you should consider making the switch today!

balinese lavender essential oil beauty therapeutic benefits

Natural skin care means using products made from raw, unprocessed ingredients found in nature. As we’ll go into further detail below, essential oils are a great way to easily incorporate these natural ingredients into your skincare routine.

The main reason you might want to consider switching to a natural skin care routine is because the skin absorbs the things that we put on it. This can be good or bad, depending on what you end up putting on it. Many natural skin care ingredients contain vitamins and other components that have a variety of benefits for your skin and your body. Meanwhile, many commercial cosmetics and beauty products are made from synthetic compounds. Some of these synthetic compounds can actually end up clogging the pores.

This can be bad news because your skin, which is your body’s largest organ, is a vital part of your body’s detoxification system. Your skin is able to rid your body of toxins and chemicals through sweat, which comes through the pores. The problem with chemical-based cosmetics products is that not only is your skin absorbing some of these chemicals, but it is also becoming more difficult for it to remove them from the body in the process.

balinese lavender essential oil beauty therapeutic benefits

So that’s why we always advocate for a natural skin care routine here at Utama Spice. Like we always say, “If you wouldn’t cook with it, you shouldn’t put it on your body.”

Other reasons to consider using natural skin care solutions is because it’s better for the environment and can be better for your wallet too!

While it depends on the particular company, many natural skin care products, like essential oils, are grown, harvested and made in sustainable ways. Because the ingredients are made from raw, unprocessed things found in nature, the byproduct from making many natural skin care ingredients and products, like essential oils, is all natural and safe. Meanwhile, many commercial cosmetics and beauty products are mass-produced and the process can release the chemical byproduct into the air or water, harming plant and sea life, as well as the surrounding ecosystem.

balinese lavender essential oil beauty therapeutic benefits

But don’t worry, natural skin care products are a proven, effective alternative, and they can be quite affordable too! As you’ll see in this article, many skin care ingredients have a bunch of different benefits and uses. For instance, Lavender Essential Oil is great for the hair, scalp and skin! It can also help you fall asleep and even treat bug bites. So once you start to learn some of the different ways you can use essential oils and different natural ingredients, you’ll see that they can become quite handy around the house.

Essential Oils

Every essential oil has different potential benefits for your home, health, skin, scalp or hair. So while this leads to an extremely wide range of benefits you can get from essential oils, this also means that there might not be a one-size-fits all essential oil that will do everything. But with the right collection of a few essential oils, you’ll be able to tackle almost any problem, condition or issue!

The reason essential oils are all so different and have different effects and benefits is because each one has its own unique chemical composition. Essential oils are made from plants, seeds, fruits, trees, vegetables, roots; all things found in nature. Each essential oil is made from just one of these natural, unprocessed ingredients. The natural ingredients that are made into essential oils all have their own different medicinal and therapeutic properties. These properties are thanks to various minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, fatty acids and more that all combine to provide a whole bunch of benefits.

Using Essential Oils on the Hair & Skin

As we mentioned in our article about Essential Oils for Skin Care, when it comes to essential oils for skin use, it is important to spend a little time studying the essential oils you’re using. Many essential oils are gentle and good for application to the hair, face, skin, scalp and lips, while other essential oils might be less gentle. Some of these less gentle essential oils can still have some great benefits for the skin, so if you’d like to use one, all you have to do is dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil.

We go into greater detail about carrier oils in our post about Natural Skin Care At Home, but carrier oils are perfect for mixing essential oils with before using on the skin. As we wrote in our previous post, Natural Skin Care At Home, some of our favorite carrier oils to mix with essential oils are Argan Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil and Tamanu Oil. We also love Jojoba Oil for use on the skin and will be discussing it more in our next article, Jojoba Oil: Bali Beauty Benefits.

Carrier oils are great to use even with the gentler essential oils because they all have their own wealth of benefits and uses for the skin. For example, Argan Oil has plenty of uses for the skin just on its own. From our previous article Argan Oil for Skin, here’s our 10 favorite reasons and ways to use argan oil for your skin.

Top 10 Best Argan Oil Benefits for Your Face & Skin

Many of the best essential oils for skin have antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make them very healthy for the skin and the body. These types of properties can help with everything from wrinkles and sun damage to moisturizing and provide hydration. Certain oils like argan oil, can help to balance the hydrolipidic film of your skin, restoring the correct balance of oil to skin that was either too dry or too oily. Because argan oil is also non comedogenic, this can make it amazing for treating acne.

Don’t worry, in this article we’ll also give you our Top 10 Essential Oils to Use on Your Skin so you can get your collection started today. We already mentioned our 5 favorite carrier oils, so next, let’s talk more about the benefits you can expect from essential oils for your skin.

It contains antioxidants that fight free radicals, antiseptic properties that fight off bacteria and microbes, antifungal properties that fight off any fungal infections, and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling.

Lavender essential oil also contains several vitamins that have amazing benefits for the skin. According to Maple Holistic, “Lavender oil is high in antioxidants and vitamins A and E. Vitamin A, also known as retinol, prevents signs of aging by protecting skin from damaging free-radicals. It also helps with cell regeneration, resulting in baby-soft skin over time. Another vitamin which helps prevent sun damage is vitamin E, also found within lavender essential oil. Furthermore, vitamin E serves as a skin emollient, which means that it keeps the skin hydrated and moisturized in a natural way. It calms itchy skin and functions as a natural anti-inflammatory to help reduce redness, swelling, and dryness of the skin.”

So you can see why lavender essential oil is one of our favorite essential oils for the skin! In our own article on Lavender Essential Oil for the Skin, we go into greater detail about how to use lavender essential oil for your skin care routine.
